Element Designs’ Top 3 Blogs of 2017
Showcase the Year’s Most Popular Trends and Important Materials!
Ah, December. What a magical time of year! Holiday gatherings, the first snowfall, and a chance to reflect on the year that was. As we look back on 2017, we can’t help but think about the most popular design trends and standout materials of the year. Reviewing where we’ve been together is a great chance to envision what might be appearing on the design horizon in 2018.
For a comprehensive overview of what can be described as a terrific year in design, here’s a quick look at our top 3 blogs of 2017:
- Kitchen Hardware: A Design Statement. As any savvy designer knows, just changing the hardware can result in a great deal of satisfaction and impact. A switch in hardware can alter the feel of a kitchen or bathroom cabinet entirely. The right handle or knob transforms outdated into stylish, plain into contemporary, and standard into custom! This popular blog post discussed the benefits of installing streamlined, minimalist hardware and providing multiple design options to customers to keep them happy.
- A Clear Difference: Why Low-Iron Glass Is the Designer’s First Choice. Another stand-out post from 2017 took a closer look at the wonders of low-iron glass. Low-iron glass uses a formula that contains a much lower amount of iron than clear glass. And while it’s impossible to avoid iron in commercial glass completely, low-iron glass provides for an incredibly transparent product with only a very slight blue tint. Low-iron glass is made from low-iron silica sand and has a ferric oxide content of .01 percent, while most clear glass has about 10 times that amount. This is important because it allows for better color neutrality, more natural light, and edges that are clear.
- From Trend to Design Staple: Warm Metallics. Rounding out the top 3, this post highlighted the enduring popularity of warm metallic materials in design, and explained that it’s wise to mix warm tones like gold, brass, and copper with cooler tones such as silver, nickel, or chrome—and to combine them with natural fibers. Perhaps one of the reasons designers were so excited about metals is the great variety of moods, styles, and atmospheres that can be achieved with them—from mid-century cool, for example, to Scandinavian luxe. In 2017, designers took the metallic craze to an entirely new level by putting the smooth, shiny substance to use in entirely new and exciting ways: walls, stairs, ceilings, joinery, and even textiles.
